This is an easy dog trick to work on because many dogs will naturally extend their paw when they want a treat. Have your dog start in a sitting position and use your hand to put a treat slowly towards the ground near your pup’s paw. As your dog lifts their paw in anticipation of receiving their tasty treat, give them positive reinforcement with a verbal cue like “shake”. You ultimately want to have your dog raise their paw to their chest level. After a while, you can simply use the verbal cue and praise to have your dog shake.
Your dog might already know this one and shower you with kisses on a regular basis. If not, it’s easy to help them learn! All you need to do is place a treat on your cheek and use a verbal cue like “kiss” to teach your dog to give you all the wet dog kisses you want. Kids always love this trick.
This trick will be different for each breed of dog. It also helps to solve excessive barking if your dog is a talker. Get your dog excited by playing with them and using a happy tone. Have your dog sit and then grab a dog treat. Wave the treat around your dog’s nose until your dog begins to whine or make noise. As soon as they start to get vocal, reward your dog with the treat. Keep practicing this process and eventually add in a verbal command like “speak” to help them understand what you are looking for. One thing to note, only reward your dog for speaking when they are in a sitting position. Otherwise, you could be rewarding barking and bad behavior that will be hard for you to correct.
Teaching your dog tricks is a great way to spend time with them and stimulate their minds. There are plenty of other tricks you can try out, but these are definitely some of the easiest.
